Earl Sweatshirt doesn't waste a single word or breath in his music. His album 'Some Rap Songs' is a masterclass in brevity, with 15 songs that clock in at just 25 minutes. His stream-of-consciousness raps are both clever and complex, and the production, done by Earl himself and his regular collaborators like Denmark Vessey and Gio Escobar, uses subdued soul and jazz loops. This album is a dense listen, both frantic and calm, and is definitely a hip-hop triumph. Check out tracks like 'Riot!' which samples a piece by Earl's uncle Hugh Masekela, or 'The Mint' featuring Sage Elsesser. 'Shattered Dreams' and 'Red Water' are also great, and 'Playing Possum' uses vocal samples from Earl's mother Cheryl Harris and his late father Keorapetse Kgositsile. Other standout tracks include 'Nowhere2go', 'December 24', and 'Ontheway!'. This is a black vinyl import pressing that comes with a printed insert, released by Tan Cressida / Columbia / Sony in 2018.
