The first vocal album by the beloved Ethiopian nun, composer, and pianist Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru. These are profound and moving home cassette recordings made during political upheaval. The songs, full of wisdom, loss, and exile, were sung into a boombox with Emahoy's unique piano. They reflect on the 1974 revolution and the Red Terror in Ethiopia, and hint at her future exile in Jerusalem. Emahoy's music combines Western classical tradition with Ethiopian traditional and Orthodox music. Recorded between 1977 - 1985, these songs are distinct from her previous releases, filled with ambient sounds that make you feel close to her during recording. Before her passing in March 2023, Emahoy hoped to share this music widely. In collaboration with her family, we're proud to release it in what would have been her 100th year.
