The talk around Black Marble's hit LP 'It's Immaterial' in 2016 focused on Chris Stewart's move from NYC to LA. But 'Bigger Than Life' is his first real LA - made record. After his car broke down upon arrival, he took the bus daily, which influenced this album. He describes it as being less about his perspective and more about the way things are. The sound of 'Bigger Than Life' is classic Black Marble, relying on vintage analog gear. This time, Stewart used MIDI on his MPC to write and sequence, detaching further from the computer. The album starts straight - forward, with a line like 'I never ever met a normal girl who kept bones under her bed' just 30 seconds in. It has strong vintage coldwave vibes, but Stewart seems to have opened up a bit, with brighter, poppier melodies similar to New Order. Tracks like 'Daily Driver', 'Grey Eyeliner', 'Shoulder' and the title track are as catchy as any in 'Immaterial'. 'One Eye Open' is perfect for goth club dancefloors. There are also introspective moments, like 'Feels' and the sober closer 'Call'. This 2022 royal blue limited - edition vinyl, released by Sacred Bones Records, includes a digital download and celebrates 15 years of the label. Recommended!
