Imagine the mind - blowing experience of hearing 'Phylyps Trak' when it first hit the scene in 1993. Even after 20 years, its sound is still amazing. Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald, the duo behind Basic Channel, take Detroit techno chords and add German - engineered studio effects. The result is an otherworldly sound that was unique at the time. They also add a minimally programmed 909, setting the blueprint for much of the coming dub techno. 'Phylyps Base' simplifies the sound and adds more sonic space, making it easier to digest. 'Axis' closes the 12 - inch, building on the formula and increasing the tempo. This is an essential record for any techno fan. If you can only own one Basic Channel record, choose this one. Music label: Basic Channel 1993 / 2014. Reviewed by Joey Coco 08/2014.
