When Donuts first landed in the Lab, I gave it a quick listen. Eager to catch the new episode of Lost, I wrote a short blurb. It wasn't until a few days later, after J Dilla passed away, that I realized how much I believed in what I'd written. Here's the original review. R.I.P., Mr. Yancey: Everyone, from indie hip - hop fans to top - notch producers, agrees Dilla is a legend. This record with 31 brand - new beats from the master confirms it. Donuts is a collection of instrumentals. Despite being under 2 minutes each, they sound full and form a unified whole. It's a new statement for the veteran, and it's perfectly timed. Recommended. It comes in a black double vinyl pressing and is from the Stones Throw label in 2006. Reviewed by Chris Lemon - Red in 02/2006.
