The Inheritors is a real surprise. If you know James Holden's past works, you'll be even more amazed. The opening synthesized drone of 'Rannoch Dawn' signals a unique musical journey. This album shows Holden exploring new ground. From a teenage trance prodigy who remixed Britney Spears, this is a very unexpected album, yet it's incredibly satisfying to listen to. Holden has shed his progressive trance roots and embraced krautrock - inspired modular synth work. You can hear traces of Cluster, Popol Vuh, and a touch of Boards Of Canada's pastoral feel. But while the Scottish duo uses lush synth pads, Holden takes a more aggressive approach, as if his synthesizer is about to break and he's holding it together. The chaos sometimes reaches a peak, but he knows how to bring it back. Why settle for predictable electronic music when this chaos sounds so great? Highly recommended.
