The latest Grouper record was recorded during a 2014 Wyoming residency but got interrupted when Liz Harris fell ill. Instead of restarting later under different conditions, she embraced the work as it was. The brevity of the music adds deeper meaning. Harris says, “The intimacy and abbreviation of this music allude to an essence that the songs' lyrics speak more directly of.” Like 'Ruins', 'Grid Of Points' has Harris sharing her soul over tender piano melodies, without the lo - fi fuzz of her earlier works, but with a touch of reverb and vocal harmonies. The result is a set of ghostly, disarming songs that feel both distant and close. Her lyrics are mostly hard to decipher, though she included 'Birthday Song' lyrics. She believes a song belongs to its finder. The closing track 'Breathing' is one of the most moving Grouper songs. After 1.5 minutes of dreamy incantation and piano, she fades out as a freight train sounds for the last 2 minutes. The record's outer sleeve has an original drawing from Harris' 'Double Object' series and comes with a double - sided black & white insert. It's a black vinyl pressing from Kranky in 2018 and is highly recommended.
