Phil Cohran, born 85 years ago in Mississippi, moved to Chicago in the mid - 50s and joined Sun Ra's Arkestra. He found his unique voice with Sun Ra, and you can hear it in 'Angels And Demons At Play' from 1960. When Sun Ra moved east in 1961, Cohran stayed in Chicago, founded the Affro - Arts Theater, and recorded with the Artistic Heritage Ensemble for his Zulu Records. He raised a large family, eight of whom form the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Their musical journey was fueled by their father's teachings and music. 'Frankincense And Myrrh' is a regular in their set, and 'Alyo', the opener of their first HJ's album, is a Cohran composition. Recorded in Chicago in June 2011 by R.
