Dexter Gordon: One Flight Up Vinyl LP

Before this session was recorded in Paris, Dexter Gordon moved to Scandinavia. The well - known tenor saxophonist felt liberated as a jazz musician and a person. This freedom is clearly shown in the track lengths on 'One Flight Up'. 'Tanya' takes up the whole first side. No longer limited by the American music scene's short - hit expectation, Gordon and his quintet could jam for a long time. Gordon's bluesy tenor is a bit toned down compared to Donald Byrd's upfront trumpet, and Kenny Drew's piano chord structures hold the songs together. 'Coppin' The Haven' gives Byrd more space to shine, with its modal minor key floating smoothly over the swinging rhythm section.
