It's amazing how much music Dilla created during his short time on Earth. Since his passing in 2006, there have been a couple of full - beat albums like The Shining and Ruff Draft. But Jay Stay Paid is special. Dilla's mother, 'Ma Dukes' Yancey, lovingly compiled it, and Pete Rock, one of Dilla's key influences, arranged and mixed it. This album gathers the best DAT scraps and beat sketches from Dilla's entire career. It flows from the early 90's boom bap loops of his Ummah era to the looser, rawer Donuts - style beats. The tracks are mixed in a radio - show style with DJ shout - outs and Dilla's own drops. It's a must - have for Dilla fans. Highlights include 'King', 'I Told Ya'll', etc. With 28 tracks in total, it features guest verses from Black Thought, DOOM, Havoc, and Raekwon. It comes as a black double vinyl pressing, released by Nature Sound in 2009.
