Description

This record has sparked numerous late - night conversations at our Lab. It features some of the most amazing grooves ever pressed on vinyl. With the powerful drumming of Alphonse Mouzon, it offers complex musical movements. Sampled by big names like Tribe for their Low End Theory interludes, Beastie Boys in 'Get It Together', Pete Rock on his first album, and Babu in Comprehension, there are countless sample - worthy moments. The vocals are a unique selling point. McDaniels' religious - themed vocals aren't traditional good singing; he sounds like a mix of a drunk cocktail lounge singer, a chump choir singer, and an armageddon folk singer. Yet, over the funky arrangements, his vocals are strangely captivating. On tracks like 'Jagger the Dagger', the vocals blend perfectly, while on others like 'See What's Happening...' in 'Headless Heroes', they create an interesting clash. This album really makes you think and tests the idea of quality vs. rare quality in the music - digging scene. Music label: Atlantic 1971. Reviewed by the mgmnt 05/2009.
