Awesome Tapes From Africa's second official release broadens the scope of African music beyond high - life and Afro - beat. It's truly refreshing to discover the rich diversity that often goes unnoticed in Western mainstream. Brian Shimkovitz of Awesome Tapes From Africa says Bola's music combines a powerful spirit with a unique sound from Ghana's remote Upper East Region. Bola, who grew up herding livestock in the savannah away from big cities, has transformed his hometown sound into avant - garde music. His bold music comes from the kologo, a two - stringed lute with a calabash gourd resonator, and raspy Frafra language vocals. Traditionally, kologo performances take place at pito bars, weddings, and other events, where Bola developed his solo skills. In recent years, with the help of his mentor Guy One, he recorded some of the most dynamic music from Ghana since the '90s. Volume 7, released in 2009, is part of his great series on CD and cassette. Bola uses traditional elements but also incorporates modern Ghanaian music like drum machines, synths, and powerful bass. Inspired by King Ayisoba, he takes the kologo to new heights.
