Devendra Banhart, a Venezuelan - American singer - songwriter and visual artist, was born in Houston and raised in Venezuela before moving to California as a teen. After dropping out of the San Francisco Art Institute, he became a busker and toured Europe. Discovered by Michael Gira of Swans, he signed with Young God Records and released several acoustic EPs. His sound evolved, and by 2005's 'Cripple Crow', it had become more elaborate. 'Ma' is his 10th record and his most accessible one yet. It's full of thoughtful, autobiographical stories, offering a new level of emotional closeness compared to his past experimental works. Tracks like 'Memorial' have gentle strumming and raw vocals, 'Now All Gone' might remind you of a slow - paced 'Space Oddity' with Cate Le Bon on backing vocals, and 'Kantori Ongaku' has a breezy feel like Lou Reed's 'Transformer' era. This limited - edition record is pressed on indie exclusive transparent red vinyl. It comes with a 24x26 poster with lyrics and a printed insert. Music label: Nonesuch 2019.
