His Oscar performance was nervously brilliant. That same year, Either/Or was released. This album, with added instruments beyond his guitar and voice, bridges the gap between the lo - fi darkness of Roman Candle and Elliott Smith and the polished studio sound of XO and Figure 8. The lyrics are as bleak as ever, yet the songs have a pop touch. Either/Or beautifully captures Smith's knack for playing with contrasts, like the push - pull between dissonance and melody, and the acceptance of today's disappointment with hope for tomorrow. Smith struggled with alcoholism and addiction, but his music also shows his capacity for love.
