Everyone's beloved soft - focus disco group Chromatics is back after seven years. Before this comeback, they recorded seven covers of Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', contributed to the Twin Peaks reboot, and had an interesting incident with Johnny Jewel. They've evolved from their early shrill and noisy sounds but remain full of surprises. 'Closer To Grey', released in October 2019, continues their series of widescreen pop records with a cold and minimalist feel. The album starts with a cover of Simon and Garfunkle's 'The Sound of Silence', marked by a ticking clock over analog hiss. It also features a great slow - motion beatbox version of The Jesus & Mary Chain's 'On The Wall'. Tracks like 'You're No Good' show off icy synths and perfect drum programming with Ruth Radeley's unique vocals, and the title track 'Closer To Grey' brings to mind New Order's guitar - synth interplay.
