Michelle Zauner's Jubilee is a real breakthrough! I first saw Japanese Breakfast opening for Mitski in a 150 - seat venue in summer 2016. It was an intimate and engaging show, and it was clear both Mitski and Zauner were on the rise. But I never imagined how successful they'd become. Jubilee lets Zauner shine as a songwriter and performer. The songs are so catchy; the hook of 'Be Sweet' got stuck in my head right away. The orchestral chamber - pop of 'Paprika', 'Tactics', 'Kokomo, IN', and 'Posing For Cars' is rich, moving, and brings to mind Secretly Group's best works. If you can only have one Japanese Breakfast record, make it Jubilee. This 10 - track album comes on black vinyl, housed in a gatefold sleeve, and includes a digital download. It's from the music label Dead Oceans in 2021. Reviewed by SHH! in 03/2022.
