In 1999, Breaker Morant was formed in Austin, TX. Before releasing their debut album, How Strange, Innocence, the instrumental rock group changed their name to Explosions In The Sky. Initially released as 300 CD - Rs on Sad Loud America, the album was remastered and re - issued on CD by Temporary Residence in 2005. This early work features a relatively minimalist style, described by Pitchfork as 'no explosions, only minor flares'. The band's sound shows influences from Mogwai and Godspeed! but also hints at their unique style with intricate guitar layers, crashing drum fills, long meditations, and surprising arrangements. The band once felt embarrassed about this record, yet tracks like 'Magic Hours' and 'Time Stops' are worth a close listen. Previously only available as a super - limited tour exclusive vinyl in 2004, it's now a Discogs legend. To mark the group's 20th anniversary, Heba Kadry remastered the album, and Bob Weston (of Shellac, Mission of Burma) recut the lacquers. It comes in a heavy - weight triple gatefold jacket. The LP is pressed on light and dark blue mixed vinyl, with a specially etched D - side and liner notes from the band.
