In 2005, when Leon Michels and El Michels Affair released Sounding Out The City, no one could predict what Michels' 'cinematic soul' sound would evolve into. After four EMA studio albums and numerous tribute and remix projects, Michels ventures into hip - hop, creating a musical backdrop for Black Thought of The Roots. Michels offers his deep, soul - infused production, and Black Thought delivers some of his most personal verses. Instead of sending live - recorded tracks, Michels used a sampler, sampling his own work and records from his collection. For Glorious Game, he composed and recorded soul songs in the studio, sampled himself, and created instrumentals for Black Thought. Some tracks have a traditional hip - hop start from samples, with live instrumentation added. Mostly, he reinvents his own compositions.
