The debut full - length album from White Material co - founder, DJ Richard. 'Grind' evolves from his earlier works, shifting from the raw 12 - inch release tracks to a more peaceful and melancholic house and techno style. It combines Berlin synthetic sounds with the noisy textures of the American underground. In DJ Richard's music, constant tones flow while dissonant arpeggios and melodies emerge from the depths, only to submerge again. Most of the album's songs seem deceptively simple, made up of few elements and with restrained drums. However, the tracks expand and contract, bending time like the best electronic music. Lose yourself in tracks like 'Savage Coast', 'Bane', or 'Nighthawk' and it might be hard to break free. There are dark, claustrophobic moments that open into ambient worlds, along with emotional techno workouts and dance - floor gloom. Music label: Dial 2015. Reviewed by Joey Coco in 09/2015.
