Some bands stay fresh forever, and Deerhoof is one of them. With each album, they reinvent their sound. La Isla Bonita is a departure from the synth - heavy Breakup Songs. This time, they dig into their punk rock roots, extracting every bit of energy. The bass, drums, and guitar create interlocking grooves, with Satomi Matsuzaki's vocals filling the gaps. The vocals have the usual nonsensical phrases, but the sparse song arrangements give them new depth. The songs alternate between funky and heavy, offering some of Deerhoof's most accessible music in years. Check out 'Mirror Monster,' 'Last Fad,' and 'Black Pitch,' then explore the whole album.
