The Phenomenal Bud Powell showcases the troubled yet brilliant pianist at his career peak. Powell was among the pioneers who introduced bebop style to the piano with this Blue Note recording, first released in 1955. Volume 1 consists of two sessions. The 1949 session features Powell performing in a quintet with Fats Navarro, Sonny Rollins, Tommy Potter, and Max Roach. Highlights like 'Bouncing with Bud', '52nd Street Theme', and 'Dance of the Infidels' are amazing, with 'Un Poco Loco' standing out. This album is not only a great listen but also a key marker in Afro - Cuban jazz development. Powell struggled with alcohol and was often in psychiatric hospitals, partly due to a police beating at 20. He received electroconvulsive therapy during his stays. After nearly 2 years in a mental hospital, he was released in 1953 under the guardianship of Oscar Goodstein, owner of the Birdland Nightclub. His post - hospital playing was affected by Largactil for schizophrenia treatment. By the late 50s, his talent declined. The Phenomenal Bud Powell captures the unique skills of a revolutionary jazz pianist who changed how musicians play the piano.
