Bob James, a name well - known to every hip - hop enthusiast, is a legendary keyboardist who pioneered the 70s jazz - funk sound. He created numerous covers and original pieces for labels like CTI, RCA, and Tappan Zee Records. His early recordings, especially tracks like 'Nautilus' and '(Take Me To The) Mardi Gras', have been sampled extensively and are considered foundations of the hip - hop movement. Until now, there hasn't been a complete collection of his raw and funky early work. Back then, he favored the Rhodes electric piano, before shifting to a more synthesized smooth - jazz style. 'Rhodes Scholar', compiled by Andrew Mason, offers funk - filled cuts from his early days, cutting out the smooth - jazz elements of his later years. These are his most sampled and heaviest tracks.
