In 2013, songwriter Kevin Morby, well - known as the singer/guitarist of Brooklyn's the Babies and bassist for Woods, released his solo debut. This Kansas City native, now a Los Angeles resident, calls the record 'an homage to New York City,' his home for the past five years. Harlem River presents eight intertwined stories of tragedy and misfortune, with the city as the backdrop. Different from his well - known projects, Morby's solo work has a haunting intimacy. Although he says the songs are about others, you can feel a part of him in each one, a world of lost love, addiction, violence, and prayers for the departed. This album comes on opaque forest green colored vinyl, includes a printed lyric insert, was originally released in 2013, and is under the Woodsist label in 2022.
