The second studio album from Bay Area's Joanna Newsom, Ys was first released in 2006. Four out of five tracks feature full - orchestra arrangements by Van Dyke Parks. Inspired by Roy Harper's 1971 album Stormcock, evident in song length and orchestration. Ys received wide critical acclaim and made many 2006 year - end lists. Even after nearly a decade, it has aged gracefully, especially considering its artistic ambition. The album includes five songs: 'Emily,' 'Monkey & Bear,' 'Sawdust & Diamonds,' 'Only Skin,' and 'Cosmia.' It's a black double vinyl pressing, housed in a gatefold sleeve, and released by Drag City in 2006. Reviewed by graceful waif in 08/2015.
