In 2005, when Leon Michels and El Michels Affair released Sounding Out The City, no one could foresee what would follow. Now, after four EMA studio albums and numerous tribute and remix projects, Michels ventures into hip - hop. He creates a musical backdrop for Black Thought of The Roots crew, one of the greatest rappers. Michels offers his deep, soul - tinged production, and Black Thought delivers some of his most personal verses. Instead of sending live - recorded tracks, Michels used a sampler, sampling his own work and records from his collection. For Glorious Game, he composed and recorded soul songs in the studio, sampled himself, and crafted instrumentals for Black Thought. Some tracks take a traditional hip - hop approach with sampled music and added live instruments, but mostly, it's his reinterpretation of his own compositions. The result is an organic, loop - based sound perfect for Black Thought.
