Everyone's beloved soft - focus disco group Chromatics is back! After a seven - year hiatus, they've been quite busy. They recorded seven versions of Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', brought unique vibes to the Twin Peaks reboot, and had an interesting record - pressing incident with Johnny Jewel. Their sound has evolved from the shrill early days to something more refined. 'Closer To Grey', released as a surprise in October 2019, continues their series of widescreen pop records with a cold, minimalist feel. The album kicks off with a cover of Simon and Garfunkle's 'The Sound of Silence', marked by a ticking clock cutting through analog hiss. It also features a great slow - motion beatbox take on The Jesus & Mary Chain's 'On The Wall'. Tracks like 'You're No Good' showcase icy synths and perfect drum programming with Ruth Radeley's distinct vocals, and the title track 'Closer To Grey' evokes the guitar - synth interplay of New Order.
