Perfect Blue was a standout title in Blockbuster Video's oddly - curated Anime section, which seemed a bit too close to kids' stuff. A landmark in animated storytelling, this bleak psychological horror film criticizes the media - driven consumerism and vanity of Japan's early 90s economic bubble. The film combines average J - Pop with a moody, chilling instrumental score, which is collected on this LP. 'Nightmare' fuses purposeful instrumentation with industrial - like sounds, 'Mima's Theme' features a theremin and eerie strings. 'Virtual Mima' resembles a contemporary Bjork track remix, with layered percussion and great mixing effects. There's also a 'vocal' version that sounds like a lost track from 1996's Ghost In The Shell OST. Highly recommended!
