Evan Mast of Ratatat releases his first solo album since 2001's Parking Lot Music! It's been ages since we last heard from the Ratatat guys. Mike Stroud has been busy with his duo Kunzite, and Evan Mast has been getting production credits on Kanye West albums. Fresh from working on Donda, Mast presents a new album of 12 mellow yet distinctively Ratatat instrumentals. The well - known octave - fuzz guitar, captivating keyboards, and hip - hop drum programming are all here, but with a more subdued feel. There are great tracks like “Koko,” “Manila,” and “New Words,” balanced by the drumless, atmospheric “Anything At All.” The album - closer “Actual Air” could easily fit on Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol.2. E*vax's self - titled record is a great addition to the Ratatat collection, showing a different side of Mast. The only thing lacking is Kid Cudi's moody humming.
