This is an early studio album by tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp. Recorded on August 10, 1964, Four For Trane was Shepp's first album as a leader. It features one original track and four tunes by John Coltrane, Shepp's mentor and a major influence on his career. The album stands out in Shepp's career, thanks to the strong band he assembled and the arranging skills of trombonist Roswell Rudd. The lineup includes John Tchicai on alto, Coltrane's bassist Reggie Workman, and Ornette Coleman's drummer Charles Moffett. It includes Coltrane's songs like 'Syeeda's Song Flute,' 'Mr. Syms,' 'Cousin Mary,' and 'Naima,' along with Shepp's original 'Rufus (Swung His Face At Last To The Wind, Then His Neck Snapped).' Released on 180 - gram vinyl by Impulse!, it combines the music label of 1964 / 2011. Reviewed by Cool Hand in 10/2015.
