Snack often asks me about Elliott Smith, and I usually give a brief answer. So, for him and those who don't know, here's the story. In 1997, Smith's career took a major turn. His music was prominently featured in Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting soundtrack, making him an Oscar - nominated sensation overnight. His nervous yet brilliant Oscar performance surprised both him and his fans. That same year, Either/Or was released. This album, with added instruments beyond Smith's guitar and voice, bridges the gap between the lo - fi darkness of Roman Candle and Elliott Smith and the polished studio sound of XO and Figure 8. His lyrics remain bleak, but the songs have a pop charm. Either/Or beautifully showcases Smith's knack for playing with contrasts, dealing with today's woes while holding hope for tomorrow. Despite his struggles with alcoholism and addiction, his music also reveals his capacity for love.
