DIIV's third full - length album, Deceiver, emerged from the band's most intense transitional phase since its 2011 formation. Founding member Devin Ruben Perez left, Colin Caulfield shifted from keyboards to bass and helped Zachary Cole Smith with songwriting. Cole Smith, two years into a new recovered life, found a way to handle this change as a songwriter. The band wrote and recorded Deceiver together in Los Angeles, a first for them as it was mainly Cole Smith's solo songwriting before. Caulfield and Cole Smith crafted demos together and arranged each song with the band. On Deceiver, Cole Smith sings about working on relationships, mending them, and taking responsibility. The album sounds more coherent than ever, a logical follow - up to Is The Is Are, with less dense reverb than Oshiin. Tracks like 'Acheron' and 'Skin Game' are dry and reminiscent of the best Stone Roses tunes. Produced by Sonny Diperri, it has 10 tracks. It comes as a black vinyl pressing with a printed foldout insert and an obi strip. The music label is Captured Tracks 2019.
