Chances are, you formed an opinion about this band decades ago, and nothing I say will change that. But if you grew up in a musically barren era of the late 90s/early 2000s (not pre - Internet but well before Web 2.0), the Deftones offered more than their nu - metal peers (maybe misclassified). If you stuck around after 'Adrenaline' and 'Around The Fur', you got to experience a rich blend of influences. With each new record, they clearly showed elements of shoegaze, ambient, electronica, dreampop, hardcore punk, and R&B. Fans disliked this album at release, but I loved how it explored two extremes of their sound. It built on the experimentalism of 'White Pony', delivering fierce metal like 'When Girls Telephone Boys' and sublime ballads like 'Anniversary Of An Uninteresting Event'. There are also warm in - between tracks like 'Moana' and 'Minerva'. Produced by Terry Date and released by Maverick (Madonna's label), this is the 2012 black vinyl pressing with a printed lyric insert.
