Animal Collective hit it big with 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion. Since then, they've only released a few singles. Centipede HZ has been highly anticipated since Deakin rejoined in 2010. In early 2011, the four band - members returned to Baltimore, Maryland, to write and record this album. They swapped some of the pop and ambient elements of Merriweather Post Pavilion for a more live - band sound, using instruments like pianos and drum - kits. The result is a return to their experimental roots, with touches of psychedelic rock, garage, and avant - garde. At first, the music may seem chaotic, but for persistent listeners, there are many rewards. Beneath the chaos lie some amazing indie rock songs. Centipede HZ is abstract expressionism in sound.
