It's been a while since we last heard from Kelis. Since her 'Milkshake' days produced by The Neptunes, she's switched labels and now her latest album, 'Food', is on Ninja Tune. This is surprising as she started on Virgin, then moved to Jive and Interscope. On 'Food', Kelis remakes herself. The album starts with soul - inflected pop like 'Breakfast', flowing into 'Jerk Ribs' and 'Forever Be'. Tracks like 'Floyd' slow things down and show the influence of producer David Sitek, the TV On The Radio producer, who brings unique sonic qualities. Unconventional song structures, guitar - fed drones, and crisp percussion make for a fresh sound. It's a welcome change from Kelis' usual hip - hop and R&B. Ninja Tune pairs Kelis with a contemporary retro - soul style like Mayer Hawthorne and Aloe Blacc. Tracks like 'Hooch' and 'Friday Fish Fry' show this blend. While at times it may not sound typical of either Kelis or Ninja Tune, moments like the Elliot Smith - esque 'Bless The Telephone' and the anthemic 'Dreamer' add charm.
