Description

Oh man, this album is incredibly awesome! Maybe it's the nostalgia in me, but J-Zone's Fish-N-Grits really tickles the fancy of jaded hip - hop fans. The veteran Queens rapper and producer shows the generational divide in rap, between those who adore the 'golden era' and the young ones who mock it. He takes no sides and seems to dislike the current state of the genre. Throughout the album, he laments the present, yet he's both hilarious and angry. J - Zone first emerged in 1999, took a real - world job in 2009, and came back to rap in 2013 with Peter Pan Syndrome. Since then, he's been rapping, producing, and playing multiple instruments on his records, sharing much on Bandcamp and pressing records occasionally. The songs on Fish - N - Grits originated from 7' releases, filled with J - Zone's unique view of rap. His productions are a bit like Edan's, psychedelic with prominent drums. The instrumentals are well - crafted breakbeat funk masterpieces. It's even more impressive as J - Zone recorded and chopped the drum and bass parts himself. Ultimately, the rhymes and beats of Fish - N - Grits come from someone who loves rap deeply and can't stand idly by as it changes. He's knowledgeable, funny, and great at making beats. Highly recommended. Music label: Redefinition Records 2016. Reviewed by Kool Moby 07/2016.
