Description

Fela Kuti made a bold statement on the cover of Ikoyi Blindness. He changed his middle name from Ransome, which he saw as a slave name, to Anikulapo, meaning 'he who carries death in his pouch'. The front cover strikingly shows Ransome crossed out and Anikulapo added above. He also Africanized Africa 70's name to Afrika 70. In the title track, Fela highlights the economic gap in Nigerian society. He contrasts the wealth - driven mindset of Ikoyi residents with the community - focused attitude of the poor in Mushin, Maroko, Ajegunle, and Somolu. Fela says Ikoyi residents are blind to others' sufferings. He revisits this theme in 'Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolowo (Slap Me Make I Get Money)'. In 1975 - 1976 Lagos, there was a rise in police and military assaults on the streets. Motorists were often whipped for minor traffic offences, and the police and soldiers got away with corruption. Fela demands equal law administration in the lyrics. This limited - edition LP is pressed on white 'iresi' colored vinyl and includes a printed liner note insert. Originally released in 1976, it's now re - issued by Knitting Factory Records in 2024. Also available are Fela Kuti's Vinyl Box Set #6 compiled by Idris Elba, Original Sufferhead - Colored Vinyl LP, and O.D.O.O. - Overtake Don Overtake Overtake - Colored Vinyl LP.
