Chan Marshall's work as Cat Power is truly remarkable. Her sixth album, You Are Free, arrived five years after 1998's Moon Pix, which revealed Cat Power's true potential. The tour for Moon Pix was a disaster, and the subsequent covers album seemed rushed. Maybe it's a good thing You Are Free took so long. It gave Cat Power time to rediscover herself and regain her charm. Over about a year, Marshall worked with engineer Adam Kasper, recording nearly 40 songs, 14 of which made it onto the album. Despite the long wait, the album is full of beautiful moments and clever lyrics. There are many highlights, like 'He War', 'Free', 'Speak for Me', and 'Maybe Not'. The rest of the album is also worth listening to. This 120 - gram vinyl comes in a gatefold sleeve and includes a free download. Music label: Matador 2003 / 2012. Reviewed by Hank Ohs 10/2014.
