Stop any fan on the street wearing a 'J DILLA SAVED MY LIFE' tee and ask them about this album. I bet it might be ranked low. In 2001, BBE took a chance and offered then - mostly - known - as - Jay Dee a deal for a solo album. J Dilla used this opportunity to show the raw Detroit lifestyle of him and his friends like Frank N Dank, Phat Kat, Dwele, Elzhi, and Ta'Raach. Worried that his work with Questlove and The Soulquarians was making him soft, the album's cover (along with the equally important Welcome 2 Detroit Instrumentals) gives a peek into the Conant Gardens scene: strip clubs, dice games, and lots of weed smoke. This album makes the most of Jay Dee's underused singing voice in tracks like 'Think Twice,' 'Come Get It,' and 'Brazilian Groove.' It's also his most adventurous, with experiments in odd time signatures, samba, and unique club - style tracks. Dee also gives his bold takes on classics from Earth Wind & Fire, Donald Byrd, and Oneness Of Juju. It's a creative smorgasbord of a hip - hop genius's mind. The included track - by - track liner notes offer great insights into his vibe and process. This is a limited - edition smoked - out grey vinyl double - pressing with a printed insert.
