Description

Juan Pablo: The Philosopher is Ezra Collective's second modern UK jazz masterpiece, following the self - released surprise hit Chapter 7. This quintet blazes through 4 original tunes and one cover of Sun Ra at a thrilling pace. It offers a fresh, forward - looking take on jazz's harmonic and rhythmic feats, free from the pressure of 80s and 90s stylistic expectations. Like Yussef Kamaal and Sons Of Kemet, Ezra Collective's contemporary jazz is influenced by jungle, grime, pirate radio, and hip - hop. But on Juan Pablo, their African diaspora roots truly shine, with the spirit of Fela Kuti running through the whole record. Femi Koleoso's drumming will captivate any Tony Allen fan. Pianist Joe Armon - Jones' playing evokes Lonnie Liston Smith, especially in 'The Philosopher' and 'People In Trouble'. The band plays in perfect harmony, as if making this record is their cosmic mission. On the second - last track, James Mollison sets a new vibe with a tenor solo before a stunning afrobeat rework of Sun Ra's 'Space Is The Place'. Originally released last fall, the EP sold out fast and is now trading for over $70. This repress is your second chance if you missed it. Mixed by Floating Points and Matt Mysko. Music label: Enter The Jungle Records 2018. Reviewed by big dumb man 05/2018.
