While 'Head Over Heels' still had traces of the metallic post - punk nihilism from their first album and early singles, 'Treasure' marks a new phase for the Cocteau Twins. They float in Robin Guthrie's soft reverb and chorus, Liz Fraser's soaring lyrics, and Simon Raymonde's swirling DX7 strings and bass. At first, I was put off by the repeated 'When The Levee Breaks' drums on every track. But later, I realized 'Treasure' has some of their best songwriting like 'Beatrix', 'Pandora', and original production with proto - Twin Peaks vibes in 'Otterley'. 'Lorelei' might be too sweet, yet it represents the band's sound well. This album is a gem for goths, even Robert Smith listened to it on his wedding day. This 180g remastered pressing sounds great and is available in the US for the first time. It comes with a full - color printed inner sleeve, a digital download, and is a limited edition from 4AD in 2018. Highly recommended.
