Key repress! We're big fans of the multi - talented cellist Arthur Russell. By now, most of you are likely familiar with some of his vast body of work. His compositions range from the deeply personal solo cello in 'World Of Echo' to classic disco anthems like Loose Joints' 'Is It All Over My Face'. He also explored country, folk, and pop - tinged rock on 'Love Is Overtaking Me'. 'Calling Out Of Context', Audika's first release, gathers Russell's unreleased tracks that sit between all his musical styles. Russell was known for constantly reworking his music. Much of this compilation comes from an unreleased 1985 album and one he never finished in the late 80s. Despite different sources, the album's sound is remarkably consistent. If you know Indian Ocean's 'School Bell / Treehous' and 'Let's Go Swimming', you'll know what to expect. There are hazy songs evoking memories, with flirts of pop and R&B. The sound is mostly electronic, with drum machines driving the rhythms. Russell is sometimes joined by Mustafa Ahmed on percussion and Peter Zummo on trombone. The album ends with a Walter Gibbons mix of 'Calling All Kids'. The highlight is the 7 - minute 'That's Us / Wild Combination', where Russell tells family road - trip stories over loose organ and with beautiful vocal harmonies from Jennifer Warnes. It's experimental, emotional, and catchy. A unique song only Russell could create. Recommended! Features: black double vinyl pressing, printed insert. Original release year: 2004.
